Most family days out on Gran Canaria are in the south, with the big exception of the aquarium in Las Palmas.
For small children, a short trip is easier than a five-hour cruise. A two-hour dolphin trip, a glass-bottom boat between Puerto Rico and Puerto de Mogán, or the submarine in Puerto de Mogán all fit easily into a morning. Most water sports have minimum ages. Younger children can sometimes ride as passengers with an adult, and the listing says so when they can.
The beaches at Puerto Rico, Amadores and Anfi del Mar are sheltered by breakwaters, so the water is usually calm. In Las Palmas, a natural reef called La Barra protects much of Las Canteras beach.
