Good to know

The south-west coast, around Puerto Rico, Amadores, Taurito and Puerto de Mogán, is sheltered from the trade winds and flat on most days. That's where the motorised water sports are: guided jet ski tours, parasailing, flyboards, banana boats, and packages that combine two or three of them.

Kayak and paddle-board tours leave from the Mogán area and follow the cliffs to sea caves, usually with a snorkel stop. They're slower and quieter, and good for people who have never paddled before.

For surfing, go north. Las Canteras beach in Las Palmas has surf schools at its La Cícer end that teach beginners.

The east coast is where the wind is. Pozo Izquierdo is one of the windiest spots on the island and has hosted a round of the windsurfing world tour for decades. It's a place for experienced windsurfers and for watching them, not for learning.

Good to know

  • Guided jet ski tours don't need a licence or any experience. Operators set their own minimum ages for drivers and passengers, and the listing says what they are.
  • The sea is cooler than people expect: around 18 °C in January and February, and about 23 to 24 °C in late summer.
  • Most tours are short, often 20 to 60 minutes on the water. Check whether the time on the listing includes the safety briefing.
